Major: Biology (This Major's Salary over time)
Pros:
  • safe campus
  • high med school acceptance rate, solid bio program
  • small classes
  • daily mass and confession (if you're Catholic)
  • showers have warm water
  • fairly sizeable rooms for freshman dorms
  • can get from one end of campus to the other under 15 minutes
  • fixed low tuition
  • near Charlotte (but Charlotte is not within walkable distance)
  • easy classes (if you're looking to get by with minimal effort)
  • Cons:

  • campus is falling apart because they don't have the funding to fix anything; therefore buildings are old, stairs creak, there are no elevators, and the dorms (with the exception of Sts. Benedict and Scholastica) are shabby
  • very little to do on campus
  • easy to feel trapped, especially if you don't have a car
  • high school 2.0
  • very cliquey students who seem to fall on either end of the extremes: either strictly Catholics looking for their future spouses, or athletes looking to get by with little to no work, partying every weekend, and hooking up even more often
  • extremely palpable divide between athletes and non-athletes; leads to resentment and issues between the two groups
  • average or below average food
  • tiny library
  • drinking/drugs/parties are prominent because these activities are primarily associated with the athletes, and athletes make up 60% of the student population
  • sewage tunnel runs right through the middle of campus, so it smells like human feces multiple times a day
  • small student center with only 2 closed off rooms for the entire student population
  • no national reputation
  • doesn't stack scholarships, meaning you can only accept one (if you receive multiple)
  • I chose BAC because it seemed to have the most factors I was looking for in a college. I play a varsity sport and I'm also in the Honors College, so I have the privilege of experiencing both sides of the school. Many people at many schools complain about immaturity and a "high school-like feeling," but BAC seems to take this to extremes. In fact, there's an unspoken rule that the athletes sit on the left side of the cafeteria, while the non-athletes are shunned to the right. The non-athletes despise the athletes for seeming privileged and elitist, while the athletes look down upon the non-athletes because the latter group does not understand the rigors the former must endure to compete at the Division II level. The campus is very small and will feel old within the first month. There is a certain "old timey charm" to it, but the school does not make any upgrades to their buildings either because they want to preserve this "charm," they don't have the money to make the appropriate improvements, or both. This school is definitely NOT RECOMMENDED for anyone with a physical disability: you will have an incredibly hard time on the stairs (and note that there is only one elevator, and that elevator is tucked away among the faculty offices). There is nothing to do on nights or weekends, with the exception of a few poorly organized, usually student sponsored events that garner a crowd of 20 people at the most. Sports games do not attract large crowds, and the majority of these crowds consist of fellow athletes. BAC attracts students from all different states, but for the most part it's a regional school. It isn't very diverse either, consisting of mostly Caucasian or African American students. I've encountered a handful of Asian/Indian students during my time here.

  • NOTE TO ATHLETES
  • * BAC overrecruits on purpose, so every team has a varsity and a JV team. This not only leads to MASSIVE sports programs, but also a large percentage of the student body are athletes. This could be a good thing if you want to be surrounded by your fellow athletes, but it could also be a bad thing if you're looking for playing time at the varsity level. You'll be facing a lot of competition.

All in all, it's not the hellhole that some people depict it as, but you could do a lot more with your money, especially if you are a bright student with a successful high school track record. Please, please do not get roped in by the allure of sports recruitment (as previously noted, they recruit nearly everybody)!
