As a current student at American University, it is quite clear that there is a host of diversity here as well as a strong, career driven spirit. The vast majority of students are here to student either International Relations, Public Affairs, Business, or Communications. We have the largest International Relations school outside of Moscow and we are regularly ranked high on an international stage. Our School of Public Affairs is also unparalleled. We are ranked also for Business and Communications but, I am less familiar with those schools. American does not claim to be a great fit for everyone. The only reason I have known students to transfer is for financial reasons, or academic reasons. Many students underestimate the amount of work that American demands from their students which is a mistake.

As far as social life, American is home to a number of Greek organizations but, you do not need to participate to go to parties or have a social life. At other schools, sports teams play a large role in student social lives, that is not the case here. Additionally, because of American's DC location, there are tons of nightclub and bar options within a 10 minute radius.

Overall campus aesthetics are a strong suit of American. The entire campus is an arboretum and the university has taken steps to beautify and update it every year. Classroom technology is up to date. On-campus housing is already a passing grade but, is being completely remodeled. Additionally, in recent years, American has expanded their on campus housing by doubling the amount of residence hall space in the past ten years without increasing enrollment to a point where students are not given individual attention. American's on-campus housing was also the only one that researchers were not able to gain access to in the DC area.

Value for money and post-graduation success is excellent to my knowledge. American is not a cheap school, nor a state school and it does not pretend to be. American is expensive because it offers what other schools cannot, and that is a higher quality of professors, and a private individualized experience. State schools that rally around sports teams may provide short term fun but, their starting salaries out of college pale in comparison to American and any other DC schools.

If choosing between American and other DC schools, the choice may be difficult because the big three (Georgetown, GW, and American) all offer strongsuits in different programs. Georgetown touts a ~17% acceptance rate making it the most exclusive, and probably the biggest name. American's is ~29% and GW's is ~45%. American is right in the middle in that regard. Locationally, all three are technically in the Northwest area of the District but, their neighborhoods are vastly different. Georgetown is a largely tourist area with lots of shopping but, unfortunately lots of traffic and smaller, more historic, streets. Georgetown is, unfortunately, not connected to the Metro because of groundrock complications that make drilling down expensive. GW is a completely urban campus that prides itself on being incorporated into the city fabric. On the Metro, their location is fantastic and truly in the heart of it all but, this does make their campus feel rather unsafe, especially at night. And then there's American which is situated in a more suburban, quieter neighborhood on Embassy Row. American is located next to the Homeland Security headquarters, NBC4 News, and the Japanese Embassy, which collectively give it its safe feeling. American's campus is not on the metro as it is located in Spring Valley but, American runs a shuttle students can take through campus if they wanted to and to the nearest Metro stop, Tenleytown-AU. In Tenleytown there are a number of places to eat, drink, and shop but, they are not a tourist destination and they are frequented by the wealthy families of Congressmen that live around American which keep the area clean and safe.
