GAC claims to be a big community. This is simply not true. GAC feels that by forcing students to live on campus through all their years here that they can label us as being a community. This doesn't do anything to prepare students for life after college. Furthermore, you can buy into the 'campus community' image if you conform, but if you express radical or unpopular ideas all you get are stares as you walk across campus. 'Minnesota niceness' prevails here, meaning that while students generally don't agree with each other, they won't come out and say it. They'll talk about you behind your back all they want, but informative dialogue is not emphasized. Gustavus has been flaunting their 'commitment to peace' in their mission statement, but the peace studies major was recently cancelled due to a lack of funding. The college does have funding, however, for a useless yet expensive dining room sign and many other building 'improvements' that should be less important than academics. Of course, admin did not feel it was important to tell peace studies majors this information. They also didn't have any problem with filing my declaration of a peace studies major in the trash last semester. Many professors are wonderful, but they are all overworked, and classes are overcrowded because the college admits a larger freshman class each year without hiring any new faculty. I am paying too much to be jerked around like this, and plan to transfer at the end of the semester.
