The biggest critique is that students do not feel a sense of community here. This is partially a reflection of the area we live in. Most students work full or part time, so the come to school, go to class, then leave. If a student wants to be involved, there are excellent organizations to join, but they are very small due to the low student involvement. In the Social Sciences, the faculty is very approachable and available. Most will ask you to call them by their first names, not "Dr. So-and-so" which make for a very collaborative environment. Can't really comment on other colleges at the University, but the limited contact I have had with professors in other colleges suggests that this feeling of collaboration is Univerisity-wide.Although CSU schools do not have the prestige of UC system schools, the education you get here is top rate. Because there is not a large pool of graduate students, many profs will let junior and senior undergraduates become research assistants. There are also student journals and conferences to present your research. This is a great opportunity for those wanting to go onto grad school!
