First of all, if you want to be an engineer, chemist, or gradeschool teacher, Lamar University is for you.

If your choice is in any other field, DO NOT COME TO LAMAR UNIVERSITY.

It is located in a slum. Half the teachers here do not speak English well and you cannot understand them. The ones that can be understood well are ancient and teach 10-20 year old curriculum. I had one English teacher who was Vietnamese and another English teacher who was Indian. You couldn't understand them. They were teaching ENGLISH CLASS. I had a computer hardware teacher who was head of the MIS department who hadn't opened a computer in over 5 years. Therefore, our computer hardware and troubleshooting class was nothing but theory. They hire sub-standard teachers to save money and try to make the campus look prettier.

I haved worked for the university library throughout my college degree. I am a competent worker and am reliable. When a job opened up in another department that was dead on what I trained for in college, they gave it to someone from another college! They won't even hire their own graduates.

Do not come here for a job at the university either. All jobs are dead-end without chance for promotion. The university believes that hiring your own will only leave another position open that they will have to fill. Therefore, no one can advance and worker moral is low. This also affects the student life as most workers are disgruntled.

As far as campus life goes, there is an over-crowded free movie night once a month. That's about it. There are no bars or clubs close by, only one theater in town, no beaches nearby, no interesting clubs. Should you grow tired of the crap they serve in the dining hall, your off-campus choices are subway, a run down greek food shop, and McDonalds about 3 miles away.

The neighborhoods are bad enough that you shouldn't go out at night. The Lamar police patrol and harrass, but have a policy that the crime rate at Lamar is non-existant. What this means is that if you're mugged, there will be no paperwork or search for the mugger. If your car is vandalized, the cop will write it down, return to his office, and toss it in the garbage. These things happened to friends of mine.
