I learned to think logically, but I have never used most of the information I studied. Most professors were too preoccupied with research to be good teachers. I learned by studying the texts, not by attending class. There were, however, some exceptions. The math faculty did not do research at that time and were very good teachers. Professors Harry Meiners and Walter Eppenstein in the physics department were in charge of Physics I-IV and were excellent teachers. Tom Shannon was a graduate student in physics at that time and was an excellent physics instructor. Another very good teacher was a young assistant professor in chemistry named Henry Hollinger. I must also mention Ernest Livingstone, an outstanding Professor of German. There was no social life except going to the Armory Bar on weekends and getting hammered. I should have paid more attention to the city of Troy, as it has a very interesting history and architecture. In retrospect, I would not have chosen to attend RPI, but transferring to another school in those days was not feasible.
