Syracuse University is definately the best college overall in upstate New York (SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Albany, Ithaca, University of Rochester, RIT, Colgate, etc. aren't even on the same page. Cornell edges Cuse, but Cornell is the reject Ivy school, remember that).

If you go to a big private school without a religious affiliation, there are going to be a lot of politics, no matter where you go. There are going to be the rich kids who don't deserve to be there. There are going to be the affirmative action kids who don't deserve to be there. Be well aware of that.

Though very expensive, Syracuse is definately worth looking at. Everything you could ever want is here. If you love D1 football/basketball then you will be in heaven, no collegiate venue beats the Carrier Dome. Any club you could possibly think of exists at Syracuse.

Under new leadership, the frat scene is trying to get cleaned up, but will still triumph as the go to party spots. Frats are huge at the University, with a large % of both men and women in some sort of Greek affiliation.

As a freshman you'll get a crap room but after that you have a great chance at having a nice suite, apartment or townhouse. Syracuse is unique as non-University housing touches the campus, as all those houses are occupied by college students and nothing beats having your own house while in college (plus it saves so much money).

Though mostly kids from Jersey, Long Island, New York and the Northeast, you'll find a unique and diverse bunch of kids. Races don't interact at Syracuse, let me make that very clear. Overall as a freshman you'll get shit on but from sophomore year and on you will run the show.

Syracuse shares dorms/space with SUNY ESF, so you have to be aware of hardcore tree huggers, where they will yell at you for pressing handicap buttons to open doors and they will use their socks as napkins to save trees. Not to mention, they are cocky as hell, always thinking they are better than SU students cause they pay SUNY tuition and get everything we get. They fail to relize they suck though.

Syracuse is a top 50 school in the U.S. with top programs in communications, fine arts, business, engineering and management. Everything thing else is pretty much pretty damn good as well.

Syracuse overall definately will provide a very enjoyable college experience, if you can deal with cold weather I say Syracuse should definately be on your top 3 list if you live in the Northeast.
