I was an out of state student from the east coast and from am major city. I wasn't able to come do a college visit because my family is poor and I couldn't afford that plane ride or the time off from work. Now of course, I should've done more research on what it would be like here in terms of the area, but all the research in the world couldn't sum up how much of let down and disappointment Oxford is and Miami itself. First things first; I don't drink, I don't do drugs, I am sort of preppy but I'm not snobby, and I was planning on joining greek life, so its not like I was the polar opposite of the student population here. The only thing to do here is get drunk. The town of Oxford is 90% bars and the rest are restaurants and a few crappy shops. If you do not drink or are not into partying, DO NOT come here. I am a very well adjusted and extroverted person and not only have I not met one person I've liked here, but they think of me as an outcast because I don't care about football or getting wasted. The clubs are an upside, but I went to two club introduction parties which was really just a meet and greet type thing. Not only at both of those parties was there alcohol, but also weed. Many of the kids here are sheltered and immature. My whole floor bonded over playing FIFA, going out that night and getting drunk, and then getting up at 1 to go to Brick St Bar to get plastered again. Coming from a city makes you very unsheltered and mature, which is the opposite of the students here. This place might be fine for kids who are spoiled, preppy, sheltered, immature, wanting to live out Animal House, future alcoholics, or kids are okay with a 30 minute walk to rec center if you're not in a frat. The academics however are GREAT! The professors are very accessible and for the most part very efficient at what they do. There is a minority of people who are friendly and non judgmental, but like I said, they're a minority. I grew up fairly popular and well liked, and that isn't because I try that hard, I'm just nice and talkative, and I'M the outcast. I am planning on transferring anywhere as long as it is not here. This place has a talent of, though cliche, making you feel empty. For people like me who aren't part of very common cliques around campus, you go to class, do pretty much nothing on the weekends, and repeat. I came here disregarding the negative comments on this site, but all of them unfortunately are true. Everyone here are just cookie cutter cutouts of mid western, spoiled, cliquey, alcoholic, sheltered, and judgmental kids.
