Major: Journalism (This Major's Salary over time)
The Journalism Department at Ohio Wesleyan University is a grand total of two full-time professors; Dr. Trace "The Tripod" Regan and Paul "Red Beard" Kostyu. In this review, you will find no harsh feelings directed toward this department. Rather, the harshness will be directed toward the administration, who seem to have something against running a decent school. The head of the department when I matriculated was Tripod. Funny, though, it was Kostyu the next year. You see, they trade off from year to year. I guess it is fair. There is quite a curriculum within the Journalism department, and every class is writing intensive. The school requires that you take three writing intensive classes before you graduate, and I had about 30. No lie. You do quite a bit of writing, and just like good professors should do, they teach you to write so an eighth grader could understand it. During my trek through the Journalism courses, I ran into a few exceptional adjunct professors who taught the extra "specialty" courses that Kostyu and Tripod didn't have time to teach. For instance, I had Professor McGurn for Journalism History. (Extremely interesting. This man taught with a passion that I have yet to see in another professor.) Jim "Wild Man" Underwood taught my Intro class when Red Beard was on sabbatical writing the leading journalism textbook in the states. (Side note: Sales of the text pay Kostyu a royalty. Those royalties that he makes from sales of the book at OWU are donated to the Journalism department. Whadda guy!) As for Underwood, he was the best all-around professor that I ever encountered. His class is why I switched from Pre-med to Journalism. (That and Organic Chemistry.) For decency's sake, I won't even mention what we did on the first day of class. Let's just say that I never missed a class. He was absolutely wonderful.Obviously, if you have read this far, you realize that the Journalism department at OWU is the best there. Why, then, are there only two profs? Ask Tom Courtice. He's the one that keeps turning down funds to hire a new one.
