The UofA reputation in my area of study was recognized by potential employers. And certainly, the better one's academic record, internships, etc., other doors will certainly be made available. However, that primarily helps getting you an interview. Once in the door, you'll make it, or not, on your attitude and abilities. And not that everyone needs to be Summa Cum Laude, or come from graduate school (doesn't hurt) - what will better your liklihood for success (my experience) is by goal setting (realistic), committment to excellence in whatever position you fill (unless you're the boss' kid, you won't be hired in at upper management level), and dogged determination to achieve your goals.

This is not easy, but then very few things worthwhile are. There is no magic secret to success, and my experience, there are few in the workforce who truly love their jobs. If you turn out to be one of those that do, congratulations - I've yet to meet one. For those of us that don't, challenge and professional satisfaction ($$ should also not be disregarded) need to be the focus. And for me, once entering the management arena, helping others focus on those objectives and attaining their goals has added much to my job satisfaction. And if you find yourself in a deadend job, time to reassess - don't waste your time in a job you hate. Life's too short, and there's too much fun to be had - yes, even outside academia! The 9-5 may be a grind, but oh the activities made possible by that income (net income, I should say - be fiscally sound)!

Good Luck (defined as preparation meeting opportunity)!
