UO's big. Big enough that I can't/won't comment on departments that I had nothing to do with. My degree is in Russian and East European Studies. There are few enough people in that department that they can probably recognize who I am. I think the faculty of this department are generally very good. The director of the center, Julie Hessler was my advisor, and I'd say the best professor I had at UO. I was always so intimidated by her because she just KNOWS HER SHIT. Alan Kimball, the other Russian history prof at UO, also has a brain the size of the cosmos. However, all these years in academia has left him unable to articulate any of this information in a concise, understandable way. Some people love him. He drove me insane. The other profs in the department—mainly comp. lit types—are competent and well-spoken. If Russian literature is your thing you could do a lot worse.

Eugene, and as a consequence UO, is an interesting little melting pot. You have the Greek system meatheads and accompanying bimbos, but right next door are the anarchy-weed-indie rock co-ops. There's a pretty equal distribution of these stereotypes and everything in between, which is impressive for a town that small.

If you like to go to big college sports events (autzen, mac court) you can do that. If you want to go to a mushroom festival at the arboretum you can do that. There's a nice variety. It does rain a lot but after a while you don't really mind it. I would say to any potential incoming freshmen that you should be savvy and research your future department, probably several potentials since you'll change your major 56 times anyway, because the faculty/course strength varies quite a bit from department to department. The only one that you shouldn't have to think over too much is Journalism. Great jschool. I'm happy with my experience at UO (and that's after transferring twice) and think it's a good comprehensive college experience for an okay price. If you're in-state.
