Date: Sep 27 2002 Major: English (This Major's Salary over time) CMU instilled a great work ethic. I had to work hard to get good grades there, and once I got into the real world, that "get it done" kind of work ethic helped a lot. I liked the fact that CMU offered a "preprofessional" twist on the English major (my actual major was Professional Writing.)In retrospect, I'm very glad I studied abroad for a semester. If you're on the fence or wondering—JUST DO IT! It's an amazing opportunity. One thing that plagued me during my undergrad years was this sinking feeling that, as an English major, I was doomed to say "do you want fries with that?" upon graduation. Computer-science, business, & engineering folks were genuinely puzzled at why I would major in such an "unmarketable" thing. But I did really well with applying my education to a lucrative and interesting career. My advice would be: "study what you love, and it will work itself out in the end." While you're in school, get a mentor in your field if you can.
