Drexel is an awesome school and its poised to become
one of the top 20 nationally ranked undergrad universities. The
bad reputation you hear on here amongst recently graduated students
is fueled solely by the fact that it has become
a sort of Drexel tradition in recent years to bad
mouth the school. These students are also the ones that
could not take the rigorous program because the school is
very generous with the level of student it accepts. Many
come here and find they are way out of their
league as far as academics. Another issue is that it
was a communter school until the last couple years... so
many of the students were living at home completely disconnected
from the rest of the school. Then the rest of
it comes from the fact that we are bordered by
Upenn which is hard to compete with, and the fact
that the co-op/quarter system makes us so much different than
other schools...so its kind of a coping system. Most students
in reality have a love/hate relationship with the university... they
know its a good school but it is also a
good bit of fun to bask in the glorious badness
that is “2nd ugliest campus” and “Drexel Shafting.” My only
real concern is that it is extremely high priced and
its a bit disconcerting paying full tuition during co-op sememsters.
Overall I had an amazing freshman year. The kids who
complain about the school the most are usually the ones
not intelligent enough to get a good co-op. The school
caries EXTREMELY high prestige nationally amongst employers, especially in the
business and engineering fields. I have many friends who go
to UPenn and other ivy league schools that are envious
of our co-op program. So who cares what the students
think about it if your interviewer is impressed. They also
just got a law school thats going to make the
rankings go up even further.
As far as social life
goes at Drexel...they are switching form a commuter campus to
a residential campus atmosphere so it is definitely improving. I
suggest joining a fraternity/sorority as it will guarantee you have
a good time here. Fraternity life The students who complain
about the Drexel party scene are definitely not in Greek
life and are also too dumb to realize all of
the good free parties and sweet bars a few blocks
away they can go too at Penn. Stay away from
the ghetto house parties....the sausage fests are not worth the
5 bucks. But socially I had a blast, partied very
hard, made tons of friends, and still kept above a
3.5 gpa.
While the campus itself is not amazing..its improving
rapidly and theirs a ton of new construction going on.
Youll find that while youre here you really couldn't care
less about how the campus looks anyways. Aesthetics are really
more of a thing high school seniors care about rather
than actual college freshman.
