I'm thinking about applying to IUP for pre-med and all I see is negative reviews. Your review is one of the only semi-positive ones posted. So, assuming your an optimistic person, I was wondering whether you actually thought the education provided was worth the overall hassle and strife that arises? |
I've since spent four years here, and I think it was worth it. Some of the negative comments made on this page are legitimate, but I can tell that some of these people are blaming the university for things that they could fix themselves, or they are just not prepared or cut out for the demands of college life. You can get help from professors and network with people, but only if you are willing to get yourself out there and put in the time. Anyway, IUP is a good choice for science programs such as biology and chemistry, both with premed tracks. Since I wrote the review I have transitioned into Finance and legal studies after deciding that medicine wasn't for me, but I still network with the bio department. Faculty here are great at remembering you when you need recommendation letters, if you are willng to earn them. By choosing IUP, you save yourself thousands in the long run over the big ten, so I would definitely recommend that you give it a shot. Work hard, don't be too sensitive and you'll have a great experience. |
Major: PreMed and Medical (This Major's Salary over time)
In terms of tuition value, you can't beat IUP. The professors will take the time to learn your name and get to know you, even in lower-level classes- IUP is not terribly big, so even my freshman lecture classes never exceeded about 100-110 students. However, when I say the student body is diverse, I mean that in every way possible. It does have students that work hard and strive to make the most out of their education, but it also has students that seem to think college is one big fiesta. The latter group, unfortunately, is what seems to be the face of the university. IUP is big enough to have the classes you need, but is small enough for the professors to know you as a person and not just for the work you put out. To succeed at IUP, you not only need to have a strong work ethic, but remember that you get much more face time with profs at IUP than at mega-universities where you are referred to by your ID number more often than your name coughPennStatecough and they will develop an opinion of you not only academically, but personally. Consequently, make sure you mind your p's and q's around professors here, because they WILL remember you come time when you need letters of reommendation.
