In some ways, Swarthmore is a really great school. The academics are really challenging, and most of the professors are dedicated to their students. Overall, as a white cis-woman, I have had a great experience, and I have met most of my best friends as a student at the college. That being said, Swarthmore is not an amazing utopia, and there are many things that I think that the college needs to change.

I came into Swarthmore as a biology major, and while I enjoyed the coursework, there was never a sense of community in the department. Even when I spent the summer doing research and there were fewer than 15 students in the department, we were all very isolated in our individual laboratories. This is not to say that the professors ever did anything to make me feel unwelcome, it is just that I always had the clear sense that the biology department was somewhere that I did all of my work, not somewhere I could spill my guts or develop deep and lasting friendships.

When I started studying education, I finally felt at home. My professors are amazing, and I spend hours talking with them about education and my life - not necessarily classwork. I have done research in the educational studies department for over a year - and I love it. It was actually through my education research that I met one of my best friends, and we spend all of our time working and hanging out together.
