Major: Undecided (This Major's Salary over time)
Penn has resided in the shadow of other Ivy League schools for a long time because of peoples' frequent mistake in thinking it is Penn State. Since Penn was ranked 4th (behind Harvard, Princteon and Yale)this year by US News, its popularity and familiarity with the public will probably increase a lot. My biggest qualm with Penn is its lack of a strong intellectual community, boasting more of a practical approach to life. But I think this is largely due to the fact that Penn has Wharton and Wharton=business=practicallity=lack of intellectualism. If Wharton were removed from Penn, the rebound effect would be greater intellectualism. A lot of people are very competitive and academically hardcore which is good for stimulating interesting debates and discussions over any issue at large; but there remains a large population of students who are interested in learning for learning's sake and for the enjoyment of classes and knowledge as opposed to the quest for good grades. I agree that it is important to get involved in different groups and clubs here, and Penn has a large multitude of them. People are in general friendly and interested in meeting you. The student body is very diverse and therefore provides for a vast number of stereotypes/niches, one of which which you will probably fit into no matter who you are. Philadelphia has great food and great music/arts. The campus is beautifual and secluded but the second you step off of it, you are in a major metropolitan city, which I think makes Penn great because you receive the benefits of two different worlds. I also feel that the factulty, administration, and staff of this University are truly here to help you learn, to teach you how to think and to aid you throughout the process. Penn is certainly a school where usually only the bright, motivated and ambitious will be able to make the most of the great oppurtunities available here.
