Penn is the best school in the US. Period. A lot of people have said some completely erroneous information about this university and I'd like to clear it up a bit:

1. Penn is really hard and the courses are so intense. The average GPA is so high because students WORK HARD, not because classes are easy.

2. Philly is a really awesome city - it has so much to offer, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Good sports teams, the best fans in the US, hundreds and hundreds of great small restaurants, bars, and cafes, a lot of other universities (Drexel and University of the Sciences actually border the Penn campus), and so much history!

3. Crime is bad in west Philly, yes, but, today, west Philly is not really even close to Penn, and it hasn't been for about 10 years! The university has implemented a successful program to reduce crime and it's getting better all the time. There are always guards and bike cops around, students can call for escorts at any time of any day, and there is free campus transportation. Crime is not a problem on the Penn campus any longer, so it should not be a concern when applying to Penn.

4. Penn isn't diverse. WTF? Of course Penn is diverse. It seems like everyone I've met is from a different background. Penn will never fall short in such a category.

5. The sports teams are great, Pottruck gym is a top-notch, world-class gym open till really, really late every night of the week, and Penn pride is overflowing.

6. Compared to other universities in terms of its academics, Penn is truly a leader. It baffles me why exactly Penn is not considered not a, but the leader in academics in any ranking system. There is absolutely no way that MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, etc., etc., are better academically than Penn. That's just ridiculous. And if you disagree, try telling that to the students that are in the library all night every night, perfecting papers, delving into the stacks on the 5th floor of the library, engaging in intellectual discussions about all sorts of topics at any time of day (even while intoxicated), checking out 14 books from the library to do research for one paper that's only worth 20% of their grade, etc. The list goes on and on. Penn is a major academic university and I hope that in the coming years it will gain this recognition unambiguously.
