Well, to be fair, Pitt has pros and cons. I am a Pitt grad, both undergrad and grad. Grew up in suburban Western PA my whole life and thought it would be a cool thing to go to college in the city and get out of the small town atmosphere that I grew up in. There are fun things to do at the school and various things to do around the city. At Pitt, there is so much of the city intruding upon the campus that it's easy to feel like there is no true campus environment. Oakland is tremendously congested and it's a true pain in the ass to catch a bus to get to any of the far away buildings or surrounding communities. I often found myself wishing for the small town and wide open space of my hometown that I was so eager to get away from. Educationally, they are heavily focused on research but that is quite typical of a university of this size. If you want a more application oriented education, it's probably best to attend a smaller college where the emphasis is more on teaching and not research. However, the research focus did provide a lot of opportunities for some great internships and projects that I likly would not have received at a small college. My experience as a graduate student was far more personal and positive than my undergrad experience. Pretty great instructors at the grad level overall. Not to say that there were not good undergrad instructors because there were, just not as personally attentive as in the grad school. I also had to take a summer course a Carnegie Mellon (Pitt's neighbor) and the particular course I took was pretty on par with what I experienced at Pitt.

Overall, it's a pretty decent education, but the campus environment is crowded with students, city folk, tons of people trying to get to the hospitals which are all crammed on campus, and others passing through to get elsewhere. somewhat ugly and parking can be a nightmare as well as expensive. If you are not familiar with the weather in Western PA, prepare yourself for many grey, gloomy, overcast, cold, depressing looking skies.
