Coming from the other side of the world, I relied on internet research and word-of-mouth to form my impression of Villanova. To say I was shocked when I arrived is definitely an understatement. Although I had not been in the states prior to coming to Villanova, I believe that I have experienced enough to develop a sound opinion on the college. Just a little color on my comparison and expectations, I try to be objective and rank universities and colleges on the global scale, so I am not making comparisons to colleges in Villanova's geographical range or academic level (which many of the online reviews do). By geographical range or academic level, I mean that when some reviews mention that Villanova is a great school, they are comparing the college to colleges in the tri-state area or sub-sub-ivies (I did not personally coin this term). With this narrow comparison comes skewed results and these results are representative of the student population at Villanova. Many students at Villanova, especially in the business school are simply closed-minded and have little interest or motivation. Although a small sample of the population, many students have not traveled much and come from a very sheltered background. Although this may not be a bad thing to some, to me personally, it is a major downside. Having come from a very different background, I believe that I have a lot to contribute in terms of diversity and culture. However, most people (at least in the business school) are uninterested in culture and (it seems like) anything apart from drugs, alcohol, money and sex. I admit that this is a very crude way to put it, but the majority in Villanova are very uncultured compared to students from top universities and colleges. Then again, as Villanova only markets itself to be a top college, one cannot expect too much. The college also markets itself as having a high percentage of students who study abroad. This is largely because the study abroad programs have internships attached (a few weeks long resume fillers) and there is not enough housing on campus to house all the students. As such, many students study abroad or live off campus and commute, which is a feasible option if you have a car. As an international student without a car, public transport is a big pain (I'm comparing septa to the excellent mrts of singapore and hong kong as well as the tube in london). The main line claims to have a great bar scene but compared to other pub scenes (especially in London), the main line is nowhere close. Some people have critiqued my comparison, saying that comparing Villanova and UCL (University College of London) is like comparing Apples and Oranges, but what I am doing is pointing out that Villanova is an Apple and not an Orange, no matter how it tries to market itself at one (which it is pretty convincing and is why I have made the sorry mistake to come here). Some may accuse me of not fully utilizing the resources here but I am making a direct comparison to other universities with better resources, so that students do not have to go out of their way to get themselves where they want to be.

In summary, my main complaint is the student body- dumb, unmotivated and uncultured. (I have not studied much, engaged myself in various activities outside of class, and still maintain a 4.0 GPA. I do not think I am brilliant). My secondary complaint is the location- some may like it, but I think it is not suitable for students. That being said, people can enjoy life here. Limit your comparisons, do not think outside the box, be complacent and never aspire to be the best at anything and you will enjoy your life at Villanova (or no matter where you are- it won't make a difference).
