I would like to respond to the infamous comments left by the angry mother of a girl. First I would like to mention that I amn a freshman in the class of 2013. I am a Secondary Education and English double major.

As stated by the vehement mother, Salve Regina University is gorgeous. The campus is historically preserved and the proximity to the ocean creates a whimsical atmosphere. Some of my classes overlook the water and I can see First Beach. The freshman dorms are spacious and well-preserved. You won't find any random holes in the walls or broken down furniture. Although, you do pay a pretty penny to live here, in terms of housing and location, it's worth the money.

As to the comments about no events after the first week of school, I think she's just misinformed. We have Things for Thursdays, which permits students to partake in activities one Thursday every month. For instance I received two goldfish for free in a little aquarium. I have also made my own spinart recyclable grocery bag. There have been fondue, decorating Christmas cookies, and airbrush tattoos. So yes, Salve does try to keep their students on campus and involved. Also there is a movie played every night in our student center Friday and Saturday. They are recently produced and mainstream movies. In our student center there is a pool table, foozeball table, and a cave with a Wii system. Whether students take advantage of this is left to them. There also has been events throughout the course of the month including visits from magicians, illusionists, and Monster Bingo games, which trust me or really fun! Salve makes a point to have as many activities on campus to keep us entertained.

According to the story about the alcohol abuse, I'm amused that an RA would write girls up without any just cause. Salve is strict on alcohol abuse but shouldn't that be something that you want there to be at a college where your child is going? This incident you speak of really makes me giggle because how do you know that isn't what your daughter wants you to think. I have witnessed and have been involved in situations where alcohol was present and write ups were involved. There is always just cause and if someone says any different, they probably don't want you to know the truth. The RAs are diligent in their rounds but they never just go into a room without having heard something. They don't just barge into your life.

As to the comments made about New Student Seminar, you are actually in 3 classes with these students and will meet for another class the end of Senior Year. That's why I was so interested in their integration program, because Salve wants to make it easier to make friends. I'm happy to know a group of kids that I've known since the beginning. They will always be there for me and it's nice to know that you're together. As for the actual NSS class, yes it isn't a real class but you have time to meet with each other and get to know other students. They also give out a booklet of free coupons to do stuff around Newport without having to pay anything. Especially since we have RIPTA, there's no excuse to get out of the dorm room.

With the comment about not being able to go anywhere at night, it really boggles me how the university is responsible for this. It was those student's decisions to go someplace where they are not familiar with and not have numbers to cabs. That's a rule of thumb no matter where you are, you should have numbers to cabs. Obviously! Yes, students can CHOOSE to stay in their dorms and play boardgames or whatever. Then there is the other option of going out and having a good time. There are upperclassmen, who live off campus and you can go visit their houses. You can go to a movie ON CAMPUS or you can decide to go to Providence. College is what you make of it. It isn't the university's fault if you don't want to go out.

The campus is extremely safe considering there are always campus police cars driving around or the shuttle coming back and forth from dorms to pick up and drop off students. If this doesn't put your mind at ease, there are blue lights set up all along campus for you to push. If this still isn't enough than there are buttons located at the entrances to the residence halls that allows you to call campus security. I've never had a problem with security and I've never heard of anyone who has had a problem.

The administration at Salve Regina University really do care about the students. The new president Sister Jane Gerety is one of the nicest women. She genuinely cares about the students and she eats at the Miley Cafeteria mostly everyday. She's open to trying to get to know the students and to hear their concerns. From who I have met, the deans are sincerely nice also. They great you with a big smile and hope that you love Salve and are willing to invest as much as they do into the college. Not to mention the people who work at Financial Aid should be considered saints. If you go to them asking for help, they will dedicate their time and effort to you. They are personally invested in helping each and every student afford this great school.

I am not a number. I am a Secondary Education and English major. I will be part of the class of 2013 yet I am more than just that. The administration tries to make Salve the best for its' students. The professors are willing to go out of their way to help you with the coursework or to listen to any concerns you may have. The Career Development Center works for the STUDENTS and helps them however they can. The Office of Academic Affairs tries to help in anyway they can to make sure you are on track to graduate. Everyone plays a part in this university to make it better for all.

It is true that there is a significant portion of people, who transfer out of school. Yet the main reason seems to go unnoticed by this woman. A majority of them are leaving due to financial difficulties. Granted, the school does give out quite a bit of financial aid for those that really need it or deserve it based on an academic standing. The school is quite expensive and not everyone is capable of affording it.

In my final remarks to this woman, who has quite eloquently bashed my school, I'd like to say a few things. Although Salve Regina University isn't perfect, it never said it was, it tries to make its' students happy. I'm sorry your daughter couldn't see the beauty in Salve but I'm happy she's found someplace where she belongs. I didn't come here looking for a party school and I pride myself in being an excellent student. Salve is the right fit for me and I hope people will still give it a chance even though one woman has apparently had a bad experience. Salve has an amazing teaching program with an amazing staff and a gorgeous campus. It's the right fit for me.

responseYou are incorrect on the with the write ups. In the suites if alcohol is present in one room all people in the suite (other room) are written up as well. Even when the alcohol came in pop cans so people in the second room were unaware. So the RA really are more like the Gustapo - guilty without inquiry.
