I attended Bob Jones University for one year. The academics were very challenging, which I considered to be a good thing. I found that the rules were too tight for college-aged people. If you still need help in discerning right from wrong, or if you need a good lesson in character building, Bob Jones might be the school for you! I really do believe that God is doing a great work in some people there. I also think that there are those at the school who really strive to be godly and create a warm, Christian atmosphere. However, there are also those who seem to be looking for problems and looking for issues with people, so that they can "turn them in" and "hand out demerits." I found it very frustrating at times when I was making a conscious effort to obey the rules, excel in the academics, and grow spiritually because I was constantly getting approached by people who were trying to find an issue with me, or find a rule that i was breaking. One thought my skirt was a half an inch too short, another told me I had a heart issue when I had a bag of granola in the library, and yet another person told me I couldn't run on the track unless I was wearing mesh windpants. I would call my parents and cry because I felt so overwhelmed by the combination of the academics and the tornado of ridiculousness…Forget to wear pantyhose? 25 demerits. Accidentally sleep through a class? 25 demerits. It was so hard to really think that this school was all about God. All about growing spiritually in Christ, when the only times I was ever approached by faculty or staff was when I was doing something wrong. I am not trying to bash the school.I do think there are some very good godly Christian people there with good morals and standards. However, I found it very hard to focus on schoolwork and my Christian walk when I had to constantly be looking over my shoulder or worrying if I was breaking one of the rules, or if someone might think I was breaking one of the thousands of rules. If you are looking for hardcore discipline and military style school, Bob Jones is the place for you! I also believe that the education you will recieve at Bob Jones is excellent. Another thing was that there really was nothing to do at nights or on the weekends if you were stuck on campus. You could go to the snack shop. You could study in the library, you could work out, watch a game sometimes or sleep. Those were the options. It was depressing to say the least. Before I came to Bob Jones, I was never homesick. After I got there, all I could think about the next break when I could go home. I met some quality people at Bob Jones and made a few close friends, but I would not recommend this school to anyone.

commentThis young lady expressed her genuine complaints without being condemning. I was impressed the way in which you expressed your displeasure.
responseYou know what? Try reading the handbook at the beginning of the semester so you know what is expected of you. You did sign off saying that you read and understood after all.
commentI enjoyed reading this student's entry. I've never been to BJU but I was acquainted with it when I was in 8th grade. My mom had recently remarried and we had moved to Houston. Instead of attending an inner-city school, my parents enrolled me in a very small, fundamentalist Christian school where the principal and his wife were both BJU alums. The pastor and his wife were Tenn Temple alums. This student is correct in the "looking over your shoulder" description, not to mention their lack of useful instruction. As an 8th grader and unbeliever at that time, I was naturally rebellious. I have now been saved for 14 years but I still have issues with how God, and particularly Christ was presented. No doubt these people loved the Lord, but I wouldn't allow my child to attend a school that employed their methods.
commentWhat she says is true.
responseWhat this reviewer says is true! For the response about the handbook: there is nothing in the handbook about the the culture of suspicion, judgmental atmosphere, and guilty until proven innocent environment. I personally went two years without any demerits but had a dormitory supervisor take second and third hand false accusations over first the hand recommendation of my roommates!
