My first years at the College of Charleston were spent swimming day in and day out. I saw more of the Stern Center than any other building, but rushing to classes never failed to ignite in me a stream of internal criticisms. At first I was nothing but let down by the campus and student atmosphere. What seemed so beautiful and pristine during the quiet weeks of orientation became a crowded and obnoxious swarm of undergrads on weekdays. Having little time to dress up or do my hair kept me walking with my head down in light of the masses of well-dressed students (considerably more girls), many of which could clearly afford the best hair care, fashions, and work-out regiments available. To add to my daily frustrations, the city had an apparent need to preserve its historic settings at all costs, leaving everyone else to trip over cobblestone sidewalks and walk far out of the way to avoid endless construction.

I am very happy to say that this impression of superficiality fades upon a greater realization that this city holds an amazing amount of potential for those willing to grasp it. I can think of no other area where anything and everything you could want is so readily accessible, let alone so far above average. Beach, food, excercise, occupation: you name it, you can find it and walk to it. When I ended my swimming career and began to explore the Charleston surroundings and the people more in depth, I discovered this underlying atmosphere that had previously escaped the notice of myself, and I garauntee, many other students who become intimidated by the caddy student behaviors. If anything I would advise, do not allow the initial lack of friendliness or the obsession with partying taint your view of the greater potential this school and city have created.
