Loyola Marymount is one of the most underrated universities and is, undeniably, worth every penny! Class sizes are small and the atmosphere is very family oriented. You are guaranteed to receive an invaluable education due to its one-on-one environment. Although most classes have an average of fifteen students, my biology lab during second semester of freshman year had a total of six people. Professors encourage students to attend office hours to either seek help or to simply talk about career options and life in general. Most professors will know you by name, and although some professors do not take attendance, other will simply because they CARE about you receiving an education. I've even had professors who have provided their home and cell phone numbers in order to help students outside of school. Additionally, I had professors who required students to attend at least two office hour sessions for a few minutes so that they could simply talk and get to know their students. Good luck finding this at your larger and "more prestigious" universities. I feel extremely safe walking around campus at any time of the day or night, and the university is very good at notifying students via e-mail, voice mail, and text if a problem does arise on or around campus. There is always something to do on campus, whether it be a party, Greek life, other club activities, watching sporting events, or attending events hosted by the university including open mic night or bus parties in which LMU pays for a bus to transport students wishing to drink to and from a location in LA to party. If you prefer to go off campus, LMU is located in the heart of Los Angeles, so it is very easy to find something to do. Lastly, the school's absolutely gorgeous grounds as well as its older and upcoming buildings, i.e. a new state of the art library, ranks LMU as one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation. Overall, the university's complete package yields some of the happiest college students in the country.

Hello! I was accepted to LMU among a couple other Cali schools like USD and UCSB. I was reading LMU's comments and yours was one of the most positive. Others did not seem to share your thoughts on LMU. I was wondering if you could just tell me a little bit more about it, for example, if the campus clears out on the weekend (Im from out of state), if there is a good selection of majors, and what the social life is like. Also, would you pick it over other California schools?

Hey! Sorry I haven't responded sooner. As for students going home on the weekends, it's true that it does clear out, but some of the comments on here make it sound worse than it really is. There is always something to do, and many people definitely stick around on weekends (a lot of students are from northern california or out of state). Other people are like me and live very close by (about 30-40 minutes away) and simply choose not to leave. For instance, I only go home on breaks simply because I enjoy the experience. Trust me, if it was completely dead, I wouldn't be sticking around on campus. I think the fact that you're in L.A. accounts for people going off campus on weekends. As for majors, LMU has an excellent business program. Most students major in business, but as with any school, it varies. I believe there are more than 80 majors to choose from. Lastly, the social life is awesome, and I believe that it's one of the reasons why so many people here are happy. There is always something for everybody. It's hard not to find something to do in L.A. If there isn't a social event on campus, people can easily find something in the city. Honestly, I would choose LMU over other California schools simply because I grew up in L.A. and I love the small class sizes and being able to know your professors and classmates. However, it's not small enough where you recognize EVERYONE you see on a daily bases but you will definitely run into friends from time to time while walking to class.
