I have just barely finished my first year at UCR and I love it here.  The campus is beautiful, lots of trees, grass, etc.  and the architecture isn't half bad.  Before coming here I thought that the campus would be ugly and sad, but that was not the case here at all.  Academic-wise, I think that the education quality you are receiving is great.  It is worth the money you pay.  Most of the professors here usually have the student's needs in mind and so they try to be as helpful as possible.  I've had professors who've contributed so much to my education and have left me feeling inspired, to mention a few names: Professor Goldberry Long and Professor Tiffany Lopez.  The classes are harder than expected, I definitely felt challenged academically.  The city of Riverside can get a bit dull but that is on my part because I have not been to a lot of places in Riverside.  I have yet to go to downtown which everyone always says is a fun place to be.  The University Village which might be like a 10 minute walk from campus usually satisfies my entertainment needs.  There's a theater, a couple of restaurants, and one store that I really like to go to that's in the UV that sells used DVDs and CDs, though I can't remember the name right now.  Your social life in Riverside is all on what you make of it.  Most of the friends you make are the people you meet in your dorm so definitely consider dorming at least your first year of college.  And let's just get this out of the way, yes there is a lack of school spirit.  To be honest, UCR was actually my first choice UC because it is the only UC that has my major: Creative Writing.  But before I had made the decision to coming here, there were people from my high school who brought me down with their comments about how UCR was one of the lower rate schools the UC system.  But I visited the campus and the campus aesthetics were enough to persuade me to coming here.  Plus, they were also the school who gave me the best financial aid package.  And again, the fact that it had my major.  I think that students are maybe a little butt hurt that they didn't get into they're top choice UC school and so they feel the need to complain.  But UCR is a good school.  I do not regret my decision in coming here.
