UC San Diego is a great choice. First of all, the academics are top notch. Nearly every program, from biological and medical sciences to engineering to theater, economics and political science are highly ranked. Professors, for the most part, are not only interesting lecturers but also helpful, caring individuals. Definitely take advantage of office hours if you need help or are fascinated with the subject.

UC San Diego is a research university, which means that most of the professors are engaged in research projects on a wide variety of subjects. The disadvantage to this is that smaller discussion sections are taught by graduate student teaching assistants. Spanish TAs, for example, are great, but many others aren't as good teachers. What's good about a research environment is that you get professors who are at the forefront of their field and really excited about their subject. Also, many students get involved with research and work closely with professors.

One of the biggest myths about UCSD is that the students are anti-social and there is no 'party scene.' The answer definitely depends on who you ask. I know some who would say they have been to no parties and there is no social life here, but I can personally tell you that there are parties and there is a social life. If you aren't partying here, it's not the atmosphere; it's you. College is no different than life: your experiences depend on who you know and hang around with. The big parties are generally off campus, but there are almost always smaller parties or crazy times on campus. Granted, UCSD is not UCSB, meaning you generally won't find beer pong on a Tuesday or dancing on a Wednesday. It's not always a crazy party environment, but there are definitely fun times. Some join fraternities or sororities, and they always have parties. There are also well over 300 student clubs and groups, further showing that students here aren't anti-social.

The beach is a 15 minute walk away, which is incredible, and there are more touristy beaches a short drive away. The weather here is always perfect. I love it here, and so does most everyone else I know. I would definitely recommend coming to UC San Diego. Parking is a nightmare, but if you can, bring a car to get around town.
