CU is a study in contrasts. In certain departments of the University, you have Nobel Laureates and MacArthur fellows, in others you have nuts like Ward Churchill. With respect to the students, you have some that are as passionate and dedicated and fun to be around as you hope for, and then some who are here on mommy and daddy's dime and who literally chose CU because they wanted to go skiing 3 times a week. Unfortunately, its both the losers in the faculty and the student body that get the press coverage and drag the public opinion of the University down.

However, don't let that influence you too much. If you want a good education, especially if you're going to major in a science or engineering subject, CU is a great choice, with the caveat that you are an in state student. For out of staters, the tuition is abominable, and is going to get even worse, since the Colorado legislature refuses to adequately fund the university, and since the majority of students are in state, the administration compensates by jacking up tuition on out of state students.

Additionally, if you do choose to come here, you'll have to deal with the fact that CU is a large university, and for most of your time here, your classes will be similarly large. Therefore, it is easy to become just a number, but this avoidable. Attend office hours and clear out prereqs early, and you'll be rewarded by access to outstanding faculty and the ability to work in top quality research labs.
