I just completed by freshman year on the UConn Storrs campus. I thoroughly loved it and look forward to returning in the Fall. I live in Connecticut but only went home a few times each semester, mostly at holidays. I joined a fratuernity the Spring semester. Pledging was a lot of work but also a lot of fun. My parents were worried it would affect my GPA, but I did slightly better my Spring semester than I did in the Fall and Spring was harder. Is UConn for everyone? the answer is No. It is big school. You have to be self-disciplined, focused, motivited and know how to study. If you are this type of person it does not feel big and overwhelming. There will not be someone there to keep on top of you. You are pretty much on your own. I went to a private high school where they knew every students name and kept on top of us. If you need that type of support, do not attend UConn, as you will not survive. If you are the UConn type, you can get a great education and have a classic college experience for a reasonable price. If you like sports, either playing or watching UConn is awesome. The Football games are awesome and UConn runs buses to them for a few dollars. Mens and Womens Basketball are the best. Intramural sports are fun with many levels of competition. Best choice I ever made.
