A
few comments about FIU: -Undeniably a commuter school, for
most of us who live in the south florida area
and are the vast majority of students at FIU, you
go, do what you have to do, and drive back
home. According to a representative, FIU plans to build approx.
2,000 more beds during the next 10 YEARS!, so don't
expect the “Commuter” label to be removed anytime soon.
-Friendliness?
South Floridians are not necessarily known for their warmth, we
simply spend too much time dealing with quite a few
idiots who can't quite grasp the concept of traffic rules!,
its a stressful city (and area) in general. So while
at FIU, don't expect anyone to say hi while you
walk by, but you can freely ask anyone a question
and expect a somewhat friendly response.
- 35,000 students, of-course
you'll be number! it just makes sense.
-The new
PantherSoft system: we're still getting used to it, but personally,
I've had no problems with it.
-FIU students root for
the University of Miami Hurricanes football team indeed, our Golden
Panthers football team is young and not very exciting, most
of us have been Canes fans many years before FIU
had a football team and that's not going to change,
at least until FIU football gets fully established in 1A.
Overall, at least for now, sports are not a big
deal within the FIU student body, (we'll just watch it
on TV if it gets exciting).
-Bright Spots: My major,
International Business ranked in the top 10 by US News,
Soon a medical school, Soon a Law School building, 2
new parking garages to aliviate the parking troubles, there is
always construction, or somethin new going at FIU, its as
fast-growing school.
-Education: Overall, not bad. Some programs are quite
good, especially Business, without a doubt, the best business program
in Florida south of Gainesville, and quickly gaining national recognition.
-Campus: Very Safe, except for a few parking disputes
here and there. Very Clean, ALL bathrooms are ALWAYS clean,
in my two years at FIU I have yet to
encounter a dirty bathroom, which makes peeing a bit more
enjoyable. Campus is beautiful, well manicured lawns, palm trees, what
seems like an endless number of lakes, and even an
airport control tower (the FIU site used to be a
small airport), overall, campus is top notch.
Final Word: It
has become the norm to bash FIU for being a
commuter school, for not being as good as UM, for
being a relatively young school, etc. I was one of
many who did not want to come to FIU, but
eventually did, and I'm glad I made that decision. FIU
is growing, FAST, and good things will happen sooner than
later, not long ago the International Business program was unknown,
today, its nationally recognized among the best, and such things
are sure to happen in the upcoming years. Hopefully many
will decide to stick around and others give a FIU a shot.
