FIU supplies everything you would expect from an public institution of higher learning in Miami. It has shallow people with no aspirations that only care about clubbing and house music, cholos with more muscles than brains, complete incompetence on every level of the administration, woefully inadequate parking, and a severe lack of faculty that can adequately speak English.Out of my 4 teachers this semester only 3 can speak English to a level that I can consistently understand them. If you're looking for a intellectual atmosphere look else where. The City of Miami is a cultural wasteland. Unless you're cuban, grew up in Miami, and only listen to reggaeton and dubstep you will stick out like a sore thumb. The parking is an absolute joke. On more than one occasion I have missed class because there is literally nowhere to park.If you're from out of town this is NOT the school for you. I know very few people at the school that are not from south florida. If you're coming to school to meet new people, this is not the school for you. I'm a very social and out going person but nearly all of my friends from FIU I was already friends with in high school. The only social life you will have at this school will come if you join one of the fraternities or sororities (there are only 4 houses so I wouldn't really call it greek life) and it is severely lacking compared to FSU, UM, UCF, UF, etc..If you have a romantic view of education (i.e. If you're coming to school to grow as a person, meet new interesting people from different walks of life, learn life lessons and get caught up in school spirit) you should steer clear. If you are just trying to get a degree (i.e. you plan on living with your parents or you are completing a degree to further career) FIU may be adequate. The dorms are overpriced but as far as dorms go they are much newer and more spacious than the dorms I saw at FSU and other schools. On the plus side (because this is Miami) there is an overabundance of beautiful (and easy) latin women at this school and a seeming lack of qualified men.The school is also going through a serious budget crisis (like every other institution in Florida) because of this they have started to in act new hidden fees. So the education that was supposed to be "free" ended up costing me over $2,000 and they didn't bother to notify me of this until after I already registered.All-in-all FIU is a fine school for what it is. But it is meant for latinos that were raised in Miami, are satisfied with their high school friends, and have no intention to ever leave Miami. As for me, I want to grow and meet different people than the pop-culture obsessed lambs I knew in high school so I am transferring to a school with a much different atmosphere that is far, far away from Miami.
