Date: Jul 07 2004 Major: Journalism (This Major's Salary over time) UF was a great expereince for an only child from a small Florida town. It forced me to be less shy and more outgoing, a good quality to have in PR and reporting. UF taught me to be an ethical journalist/public relations practitioner. The only reason my current salary is low now is because I stayed home for several years with my daughter. She is now a college freshman and I am returning to grad school to complete (hopefully) a master's in journalism from the University of Tennessee. I feel I was as prepared as I could be for entering into reporting/ public relations. The year I graduated was the last year reporting and PR were combined. In 1984 the J school began handing out diplomas in PR. PR and journalism are the "pink ghetto." If you major in this anywhere, count on never making much more tnan $50,000 per year. That is just a fact of life. I love what I do, and for me, that is the whole secret to success. Get up each morning looking forward to going to work. Work for an organization that makes a difference in our society. Volunteer for an organization that has values you can sink your teeth into. It is sometimes tough to be a Gator in Tennessee Vol country—But I remind everyone of it every chance I get! My Gator tag on the front of my vehicle gets a lot of attention and sometimes even a "finger." They don't have a clue! Will always love and miss Florida and UF.
