| Overall,
my experience at HPU has been positive. Classes are
interesting, professors are generally very good, the other students are
friendly, and Hawaii is a fun place to live. Most
classes are taught by professors rather than TAs. Class
sizes are small (around 15 students) so it is easy
to meet people and get to know the professors.
The windward campus is extremely beautiful, quiet and boring.
It is nice for studying or sitting and looking at
the mountains, but there isn't much there (just a cafeteria,
some vending machines and a small coffee shop). You
need to leave campus to have much of a social
life. The bus system is pretty good, but access
to a car will make your life way more exciting.
I also recommend making some friends and taking some
long weekend trips to the other islands. The
downtown campus is “urban” in both the good and the
bad sense of the term. There are lots of
great restaurants and cafes to choose from on Fort Street
Mall or in Chinatown a few blocks away. There
are also homeless people wandering around. Some students find
them to be scary but I think they are mostly
harmless. The crime rate in Hawaii is actually very
low. Compared to L.A., Atlanta or Chicago, Honolulu is
a land of peace and safety. The traffic can
be surprisingly bad, however. So, there are both good
and bad things about the school and the area.
If you like small classes, don't mind meeting people from
other cultures (Europe and Asia), like the ocean and hiking
in the mountains, HPU is a great place to get
an education.
