I have been attending UHM
for the past four years and each year my interaction
with staff has gotten worse. Things on the island are
definitely done backwards. Staff are unorganized and student staff are
often uninformed of proper procedure and rude.
I was also a part of
student housing staff for two years as a resident advisor.
I found housing staff to be unwilling to back their
RAs in difficult situations with residents and led to worse
confrontations. Residents often run around like an unsupervised summer camp.
This is supposed to be a college with adults. RAs
often have to write 10-15 incident reports before a student
is banned from housing. I remind you that these students
that get written up are often disturbing/breaking housing policy for
alcohol and drug possession. Now parents do you want your
kids attending a school that allows that kind of behavior?
If your are not
used to different cultures this isn't the school for you.
The locals are not friendly to people from the mainland
especially males. There are a lot of nice and friendly
people here just have to sift through the bitter ones.
I have made some great friendships while I was here.
Friends is what kept me going. If you do attend
UHM make good stable friends that influence you do be
a good person. There are enough assholes in this place.
Another thing, this
is a jock head school. Its football based and much
of the tuition goes into funding the football team's 10th
string full scholarships. Really?! Not to mention most athletes slow
the entire class down academically. I took an easy language
class for graduation credit and these football players found it
“too hard.” Wahhhh! These guys can take hits, and play
slap ass on the field but when it comes to
a five sentence quiz and a worksheet they can't be
bothered. Why do they care? They're getting a full ride
and get their grades passed by professors so they can
play ball.Yes UHM has a lot of talented and humble
athletes but majority I have come in to contact with
are arrogant, selfish, dirty, rude and obnoxious. I do not
attend or promote UHM sports events because of their attitudes.
Oh by the
way, this is NOT a four year college and faculty
fails to inform students. If you do decide to transfer
good luck transferring your credits. Most schools accept slim to
none of the BS credits you get here. To graduate
in four years you must take a lot of AP
credits in high school or take 19 credits each semester.
Tuition is also
going up every semester and they continue to have budget
cuts and remove classes. I feel like I am getting
jimped out of an education I pay for on my
own.
Good luck to all
you future UHM students, you're gonna need it.
