I was an active duty military member (and also deployed) when I completed AMU's BA-Psychology program. I think that AMU is an excellent option for deployed personnel due to the extremely military-friendly setup and faculty; in short, my personal experience was quite positive and enriching. The tuition is quite inexpensive and the material can be quite stimulating for independent learners.

As the vast majority of students are active military (or dependents), don't expect a great deal of open-mindedness or intellectual debate amongst the student body; a great deal of bigotry and ignorance was often readily apparent to me during my interactions with fellow students. While about 50% of the students I interacted with exhibited these negative qualities, the faculty was (fortunately) very helpful and intellectually stimulating; basically, one's experience at AMU can be quite positive if one can get past the fundamentalist/homophobic/sexist/chauvinistic half of the student body (which I am correlating with the prevalence of military members within that group of students).

I completed this program because I was bored and the military was paying for it (100% TA). This degree is not directly related to my occupation (medicine), although I definitely have found many of the topics I studied to be of some use. I have since completed my enlistment and am now pursuing higher education at a brick-and-mortar institution. If you are looking for an inexpensive (possibly free) way to improve yourself academically (and are an independent learner), then I would highly recommend AMU to you.

If you find completing tasks independently and by a deadline to be challenging, then I would caution you to take only one or two classes at a time; I cannot count how many times a coworker has had to pay back tuition assistance after failing an AMU course. The courses are not that difficult but they do require sustained superior effort in order to maintain a satisfactory GPA. I would also highly recommend that you complete a two-course sequence in English (if you have not done so already); your writing ability will practically define your academic experience at AMU. There are a great deal of written assignments at the upper level (at least within the psychology program).

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at AMU. While definitely not for everyone, AMU was the best option for me during my deployment. Please feel free to contact me if you are contemplating this institution (or the psychology program in particular).

I ended up doing the MPH-Emergency Management at AMU while doing two post-bacs at the University of South Alabama. I have now applied to medical school at that institution. I only applied to USA (and got in with no trouble), so I'm not sure how other brick and mortar schools view AMU. I certainly didn't have any trouble here.

Did you had to take any prerequisites for medical school at South Alabama?

Yes, I had to the hard science prereqs at South, since I couldn't do them through AMU. English, humanities, etc were all certified through AMCAS, so I didn't have any trouble there. Different schools have different requirements, so you should check with the specific school to find out about transfer credit.

In case anyone is interested, here is a follow-up (I'm the OP). I ended up getting accepted to my first choice medical school (USA COM, MD) with an AMU degree (BA & MPH). Regional accreditation is everything!

This is the OP. Whew, sorry about the long response time. Med school is crazy difficult and time consuming! Last semester of 2nd year though, and then Step 1 (and NO MORE CLASSES WOOHOO!)

1) I was EDP, so I only applied at USA. I did post-bacs here and I knew from the start of the application cycle that this was where I wanted to be. Also, I meant MD as in it is an MD school (as opposed to DO, etc), not that it is in Maryland. :D

2) My GPAs were 3.9 (AMU), 3.8 post-bac, and 32Q on the MCAT (10/10/10 Q). I don't think they have a writing segment anymore on the MCAT but I could be wrong.
