Loyola is currently undergoing some major changes intended to bring them out of debt. They have lowered their admissions standards so that it is almost open admission, put several programs on the chopping block such as Asian Studies and Environmental Sciences, and tuition and meal plan rates have skyrocketed. Course selections are pretty basic, nothing special. I transfered into Loyola from another school, and in comparison the programs and course availbility at Loyola isn't very good. Also, the technology on campus is pretty limited. There are a few computer labs but they get filled up during the day. It's difficult to find a scanner and computer labs frequently get taken over by classes.

You may get a lot of financial aid/scholarships to attend Loyola, but it's just an incentive to get your foot in the door. The tuition will go up and your aid will probably go down as the years go by.

Safety is a major concern at the University. In the past year there have been four murders within a mile or two of campus. Loyola does not do enough to maintain student safety. In fact, it has cut campus shuttle service (from the downtown campus to uptown) to about twice an hour. Many students are turned away from the bus because there isn't enough room. Loyola has also cut "8 Ride", the night time campus escort van. There were several late nights when I couldn't even get through to the service and had to walk home alone in the very rough neighborhood of Rogers Park.

Now, the positives… (Yes, they exist!)

The study body at Loyola is very compassionate and social justice oriented which rocks if you are into that sort of thing. There isn't a "jock culture" like you might experience at other schools. Teachers have always been available to help after class or during office hours. I lived on campus, which seems like the only real way to meet people at Loyola.(It seems like it would be hard to make friends with people if you were a commuter student because there really isn't a typical college atmosphere here…people go to their classes and go home for the most part). If you live out of state you will be in the minority. And yes, the campus and the lake are very pretty (but don't let that be the only reason to come here!)

I think this is a school for people who are independent, liberal, and would like to live in a large city. It is not the right school for someone looking for a major academic powerhouse-type college, someone who is not comfortable outside of their comfort zone, or who is really into the whole frat-sorority-jock thing.

Overall, I've met some really great people here. The biggest bummer is the penny-pinching administration that is ruining Loyola's once good reputation.
