Okay when it come to Northern Illinois I think majority of the faculty is nice. I am a freshmen here and so far the faculty is extremely nice and they seem to really want to help the students. Academically NIU is easy but I am here to learn so I do my work. I lucked out with an awesome roomate. So dorm life is really nice for me. However, I feel majority of the students here are lazy. I'm the complete opposite I like to work hard and reap the benefits. So to me competition…there is none because of the type of student I am. If you are like me friendly, hardworking and a go getter please do not settle for NIU. What parents hear at those seminars and workshops are all about the resources available to their child and financial help. Basically they hear exactly what they want to hear from NIU. But the students see and hear different. There was a mass shooting Feb 14, 2008. And then Feb 19, 2010 there was another shooting in the morning right out side one of the dorms. I'm not saying that it only happends in Dekalb but this school has a reputation of a gangster wanna be school. Also, on the weekends all the kids do is smoke pot and drink. There are a lot of rape cases at the frats as well. Now for a girl/guy like me who has no interest in constant partying and just getting high and drunk all the time… NIU is of no social value. When I first steped foot on campus it was just okay. It looks too industrial but overall the student body sort of sucks. But I had no choice at the time but to choose from a community college or going to NIU. But I am transferring next year to a more repuatble university. Everyone does go home on the weekends, so there really is nothing to do but drink and smoke. Personally, this lifestyle is not for me. But for those who are not interested in becoming that type look else where. Until NIU makes stricter admissions requirements it will be the same type of student body it is now. You'll be in debt after college anway. Or you might not depending on your financial status. Regardless, still look into colleges more. There is soo much more out there.
