NIU…I had a lot of great experiences dont get me wrong. I was a proud Huskie but visiting friends at other campuses made me a little jealous. The atmosphere just isnt that great. Its like this is Dekalb and by the way theres a university here. Unlike some Big 10 schools where the town IS the university. Academically, there is a lot to offer. My program was a last minute switch so I guess I cant complain that I didnt get squat out of it. Programs offered by student services are really dedicated to helping the students succeed and get good jobs after graduation. Im not in my field, but I do have a good entry level position with plenty of growth opportunity. The proximity to the city is great and also a downfall bc the social scene cant measure up to other schools bc everyones gone! I graduated in '08 and cant imagine things have gotten any better or any worse since then. Recent years a few major incidents have given a negative spotlight to Dekalb and NIU but crimes are ridiculously common. The Village is a burden. One morning while walking from my place towards the rec down Annie Glidden, I was pelted with snow balls by two kids that couldnt have been older then 10…true story! Kids from the Village…low income brings low class people or allows students to abuse the system, both are no good and it doesnt belong next door to a college campus! Final verdict: NIU is too hood for me. If studying business, its worth it if you can tolerate freshman year at 'Ghetto Grant' or else commute. If I had to do it over again, I'd without a doubt go elsewhere.
