UK did the same thing to me! How/where did you finish school? Did you end up graduating later? |
Major: Art & Design Department (This Major's Salary over time)
The comments above by "Communications" could have been written by me! I was a silly 19 year old when I followed my fiance to UK. I couldn't care less about sports and wasn't from KY, so I spent 4 very miserable years there. I received a book of scholarships availible that was as big as a phone book, but only 3 of those were availible to out of state students. I eventually joined a sorority, but came from a blue collar family who were trying to help me with the massive out of state tuition that was almost 4 times more than the in-staters were paying, so they couldn't help me keep up in clothes, trips to Keeneland, and money for dinners and booze that were needed to fit in socially. Joining a sorority was a necessity, but as I didn't come from Ky, have an old Ky family name, or have money to keep up- eventually I went alum early. I did run (successfully) for student gov, but I just found UK a "good ol' boys" network in a too large University where professors cared only about research and not enough about education. I did well- getting straight A's my last year, but regret my decision to go to UK. Out of staters with limited finances will not enjoy the heavy frat scene and the "you are just a number" mentality. Financial aid is also a weak area. I went to the fin aid office before my last year. My award in loans and a tiny grant of $600 were not enough for me to finish my year and $13,000 fees. I asked with tears rolling down my face was I was supposed to do to finish my degree and they said (and I quote)"I don't know… sorry" and turned back to their office.Go to a smaller school where scholarships are more equitable, the students aren't all about what frat you belong to or who your daddy is, and you can actually be a part of things without playing a professional sport.
