Let me try to explain why I rated as I did. I would give the academic quality here the highest possible rating. Every one of the professors here knows his/her stuff and, while some may be more arrogant or "strange" than others, all are here for a reason. I mention arrogant because, as in any intellectually-charged environment, one is bound to come across those who are, let's say, "highly aware of his/her own intelligence" (heh) and Amherst is no exception. However, most professors are very approachable and willing to work with students. I rated the students somewhat lower because, again, as in highly charged intellectual environments, you're going to get the snobs and arrogant SOBs. Many people here are extremely bright but lack social skills altogether. If you don't like singing and prefer a social scene other than getting drunk and grinding with other drunk strangers at TAP, you might want to come spend a night here to see if you're going to get along. My main complaint about the school is the snobby people. Other than that, the campus is gorgeous, people don't get straight As, and the classes are interesting and engaging (the good effect of snobby people is that everyone speaks up in class!) We're also one of the only schools intelectually comparable to the ivies that is small enough to really form a community, which is exactly what I was looking for. Everyone knows everyone else's name here. Plus, the food isn't half bad.
