Many Times I have heard the adage, “College is what you make of it” and this is what you need to follow at UMASS-Amherst. You take what you want out of your education, and this university provides the resources for you to accomplish that. There are many annoyances with this college, as there are with any. Most colleges have irritating administrations and bureaucratic red tape to get through, and quite frankly the budget cuts supplied by our state government every year isn’t helping. If you tend to see things on a negative view, you are totally going to be disappointed when you go out to the real world. There are always options, and people to help you with them. Professors in my department, albeit EXTREMELY busy, are never too busy to help you with a problem or even chat awhile, because they know that students come first. If you’re unhappy with where you live, you can always move somewhere else; each dormitory area is suited to people’s personality types. If you are quiet and a loner, you might prefer Sylvan to Southwest, where more extroverted partiers live in a cityscape. If you hate the type of people that go to this campus, you may prefer transferring to the Midwest, where people are considered friendlier than New Englanders. If you dislike the looks of the school, please realize this is a state funded (or lack thereof) school and aesthetics, although pretty at Harvard or Yale, play a VERY minor part of your education. As with any college, you should visit the place you wish to go, and if possible ask current students questions. If you have any questions about attending this university, I suggest the e-mail option by this or any of the other people whom have allowed you to contact them.
