I more or less started going here after earning my A.S. degree back in NY. Their
Continuing Education
program is good for people like me, working with an A.S. but wanting a B.S. I like having all the available on-line classes, but I don't like going to in-class classes because the campus isn't too close to the main highways, there's a river in the way, etc., and the parking situation stinks.

The faculty has been very helpful in terms of the C.E. office-staff, although the advising staff has been somewhat aloof and avoidant. The professors themselves are all very knowledgeable, and approachable, although I'd avoid Lisa Cleveland (music) like the plague. I watched several A students' GPA's go down the crapper when she failed (or nearly failed) most of the class. (Sorry, but 2 tests is not enough to determine a grade. And the "it's late, you fail" policy is too harsh with such a minimalist grading scheme.)

I highly recommend the art-history department for concentrations. Liana Cheney (dept. head) is a bit scary, but if you work hard, you'll do well. Charles Guillianio is an awesome art appreciation professor - even if you just audit, take the opportunity to take his class - it's like sitting down and having a couple of beers with an old well-traveled friend with plenty of great stories and humor. John Christ is very knowledgeable, fun to learn with, and easy going. I wouldn't say any of these are "easy" graders, but you'll learn a lot (which is the point, right?) and have a good time.

I was a bit disappointed with the facilities on the South Campus. I get the whole historical thing, but it looks like the furniture is as old as the 19th century buildings. Mid-terms were interupted by raccoons in the hallway, and the bathroom was almost literally a "water closet." Unless you wanted to go down 4 flights of really steep steps to the basement and then go back up for class…

The newer buildings on North Campus are rather archaic, as well. It's supposed to be newer and more "high tech" but it reminds me of the basement where my dad (a science teacher) had to teach in an old middle school. Even the upper floors…

So other than the facilities and Lisa Cleveland, I've had a pretty good experience at UML.
