I'm going into my senior year at Saint Joseph's College of Maine and I have loved every moment here. I have made life long friends over the past three years, and I've been able to enjoy this wonderful lakeside campus. I even stay on campus during the summer because it is so beautiful here. I came from a larger city and a larger high school, and I feared coming to a small school might mean that there was less to do, but that was not the case here. SJC is only 20 minutes to Portland (I recommend you get a group of people together and drive around in the first few weeks, if you don't wonder Portland, then you will have trouble finding new things to do). If you don't want to drive to Portland, then there's always something going on here on the weekend, bands, comedians, dances, etc. Which all can be a great time to hang out with all your friends. Being here for three years, I can tell you that we haven't lost too many people to transfering, and those that we have lost, we gained students who transfered here and love it. Factually speaking, I work in student affairs, and I know we have an excellent retention rate. SJC is not for everyone, you have to be a person who is comfortable with stangers saying hello to you, because we are a very friendly campus. We are pretty small, so if you are a popular student on campus everyone knows about your successes and will congradulate you, but they will also know your failures, and you will recieve condolences. So you need to be someone that is ok with others knowing more about about you than you might want. For those who don't mind this, it is a wonderful feeling to have such a great support system. I have had a wonderful holistic education here were I have grown academicly, socially, and spiritually. Through the liberal studies program I have become well-read and well-spoken. With small class sizes I have learned so much from other students as well as my professors. We do not have any teaching assistants here at SJC, so you learn and work directly with your professors. Professors have required office hours, but it is also very easy to catch up with a professor on non-office hours, and even in the dining hall. This ensures that you will succeed in your classes. If you do not understand material by the end of a course, it is your own fault for not trying to seek extra help. I will be sending in my applications to graduate school in the fall, and I feel completely prepared and confident. This was definatley the right choice for me.
