Albion is exactly what you choose to make of it. If that sounds like a clich, Albion is rife with them. I had friends who wanted to start their own Socialist Party and run for student government, so they did. I knew other students who wanted to go on rugged outdoors trips, so they signed up for the student activities board and made it happen. The Elkin-Issac Research Symposium draws a lot of attention to independent research projects, so many of us devoted our efforts to that, as well. On the other hand, if you prefer to smoke pot, drink too much, or just keep to yourself, you can do that, too. There are opportunities for virtually anyone.

Albion's small size works as both an advantage and a disadvantage to realizing those opportunities—an advantage because students have steady and ready access to all the fantastic resources on campus, including professors, guest speakers, and state-of-the-art facilities; a disadvantage because it is sometimes difficult to create much interest in any given club or activity.

My experience at Albion provided a solid foundation to becoming an independent and accomplished person. That experience was largely due to my own participation—I signed up for intramural sports, I lived off campus in a co-op, I started my own clubs and participated in others, and I took advantage of the many quality off-campus activities. I did whatever I wanted, and I got a lot out of it.
