I had some great professors and good courses here so it hurts to say this, but despite my department's devotion to making sure I got done and got the skills I needed, this is not a good school to go to.

There's 5 big reasons not to attend UALR:

1. The classes are like highschool classes. You're expected to attend every class, the material is out of the book, you are not taught or tested for understanding. Many of your non-major courses will involve assignments that are too vague and non-specific in what they ask you to do and you often get ripped a new one if the professor decides they dislike your work or didn't meet the requirements they believe they implied.

2. The business college is especially poor as far as undergraduate courses go, and it's a focus of many of the technical majors so a large part of the students at the school will have to take business classes. I can safely say besides one course I took in that building of the 5 or 6 I had to attend, I acquired no useful skills or information that I could apply in the real world. What's worse about this is that this is where there are skills to be gained and instead of coaching and specific tasks I was assigned vague projects with incompetent team members that screwed me more often than not. Not a good experience.

3. UALR's philosophy is guided largely by demagogues that suppose themselves wiser than god and arrange class locations, meeting times, curriculum and teaching methods that simply do not work for anyone in an effort to be unique and progressive and whatever else. Specifically the math department focuses more on changing the way things are taught than adopting longer smaller sized classes to focus on teaching the students the material and then accurately testing what they teach. I only took two math classes I enjoyed or did well in and one of them was taught by a graduate student.

4. Dealing with housing and other administration is possible but only if you come at the right time and ask early for the right people to help you. The website tools for paying for things and registering for classes are arcane and unusable beyond what you would expect for a government system. The only good thing about the administration is the fact that you have an adviser within your department that helps you figure out what classes you need to take and which ones you can tolerate to take together. Beyond that, you really don't have much to work with.

5. Capstone. The people in charge of capstone are incompetent, they don't talk to each other, they don't get clients and collaborators for all of their students that want to put students to work and help them learn and perfect skills they need in the workplace. They don't use all their resources in constructing the projects; They seem very ad-hock and scope-less. They wait too long to grade and they don't give specific goals to students to guide them in their research and work. If you get a bad capstone project at UALR, and you'll know when you get it, expect it to be a total waste of time.

These are 5 small reasons of many why I recommend everyone steer clear. The school is more focused on spending it's money to build up the college rather than give more scholarships and empower more of their attendees to succeed without a mountain of debt. Clearly they have their minds set on prestige instead of what should be their real objective: Students.

The only reason I'd tell someone to go to UALR is if it was all they could afford or they got offered a scholarship. If you want to up your income and get your foot in the door, this may be an option, even if a bad one.
