Here's the thing: Appalachian State is not the pinnacle of higher education. It's not the last bastion of intelligent thought standing against a horde of ignorance. It's not the best college you can go to or probably got into. However, it is one of the greatest experiences a person could hope to have. The majority of the people here are decently cool people. Sure, you have your bad apples of the bunch but that's to be expected with any large group of people. No population is going have ALL awesome people, there will be some douchebags. Granted, if you're the Noam Chomsky-reading, pseudo-intellectual type who spurns any sort of fun in the face of academic priority, you might not have the greatest time here. Yes, Appalachian State is a party school. But most colleges are, just not to the extent ASU is, granted. But, luckily, ASU does provide a forum for the impeccable student: It's a college. They have academic-ey stuff to do. Take 18 hours if you don't want a social life and you'll be just as happy as the guy who takes 12 hours and enjoys his time here.

Essentially, you get out of Appalachian State University what you put into it. If you want to go party, have fun, meet people, and enjoy your time here, you will. If you don't, well, you might not enjoy it as much. It's up to you.
