Dartmouth does not have the same international reputation as its peers in the Ivy League, though perhaps moreso than Brown, Cornell, Columbia, and Penn. It is really the best-kept secret of American undergraduate education. Dartmouth is the ninth-oldest college in the United States, and yet has remained a small, undergraduate-focused college since the beginning (unlike some of its peers). While it does have the top business school in the country, along with a highly-ranked medical school and engineering school, Dartmouth's focus is on its undergraduate students. As an undergradute, this is readily apparent. While professors are expected to publish research and be leaders in their fields, most of them still care more about teaching and one-on-one interaction with their students. There are of course some terrible professors, like there are at any schools, but most professors are helpful and very interested in the educations of their students. Students have many opportunities to work one-on-one with their professors, be it in independent studies or research programs. If you're looking to impress a lot of people with the name on your degree, go to Harvard or Yale. If you're looking for the best undergraduate education in North America, are truly interested in learning, and care more about raising the eyebrows of those "in the know" than you do about wowing your average Joe, Dartmouth is the place for you.
