Major: Nursing (This Major's Salary over time)
My first year at UNH was amazing. I lived in the freshman dorm: which include williamson, christensen and soon will include Alexander. Freshman living can be hit or miss. My floor was incredibly close. Picture going to dinner with 10-15 other people and becoming known as the 3C cult. Unfortunately, other floors seemed anti-social. The community on your floor depends mostly on your RA and his/ her ability to be avaiable and make socials. Freshman housing is a great way to meet other freshman but it leaves you in a awkward position come sophomore year. If you have a wonderful experience your freshman year good luck recreating it your sophomore year. The dynamic will never be the same. So, for any incoming freshman weigh the decision to live carefully.

Academically in the nursing program it is very competitive to gain admission. My recommendation would be if your even thinking of going into nursing mark it on your admission application because it is almost impossible to get in afterwards. This semester there was 8 spots for 80 applicants. In the NE because the need for nurses everywhere many professors are leaving thier teaching positions for clinical work. So,from what i hear from my classmates it is hard to get admission into any nearby colleges as well.

The nursing program is overwhelmingly white and female which is reflective of the demographics of NH and UNH. Any diversity is usually forced. Pres Heart is working on this. UNH does boast one of the hightest AA graduation rates but its not too hard considering the very low number of AA students. The nursing program is fiercly competitive but i atribute this to the fact that its all female and once your into spring semester soph year everyone knows everyone else. But at the end of the day everyone is your friend no one is gonna hold a grudge if you did better than them. In fact, the nursing program fosters a great sense of unity and friendship. You need this to get through all the difficult test and 445am wake up times to get up for clinical. Faculty is aware that nursing is one of the hardest majors on campus and tries to cut you some slack when it can. They grade fair. As for other hard majors they include biology, engineering and business. The Whittemore school of business is reknown.

Socially: UNH has always had a rep for being a party school. Now we've also got a rep as being kinda violent since we've had several riots. The adminstration has gone into overdrive trying to spruce up UNH's reputation and image. Police presence is escalated and now if your at a party it will get broken up. The frat houses have also toned things down since they've had several major fire violations. UNH offers a vast array of things to do on fridays and saturday and even thursday. The real question is do you want to do any of these things. Such activites include: mombo lessons, club sports, the price is right, guest lectures and movies in the MUB. It is often hard to get motivated to do lots of these things esp if you schedule is hectic during the week. Downtown gets old real fast: we've got several pizza places, grocery store, couple clothing knick knack places. Clubs that cater to the underage crowd are lacking and scary. But the bar scene seems fun for the 21 plus crowd. Neighboring areas to shop and putt around are newington and portsmouth.

Housing: Picking housing can be difficult. if you want to live on campus for another year you are issued a lottery number. That is the number of people who get to go in front of you. After 1200, there is usually not too many choices. Good news if your a freshman or sophomore your guarenteed housing. For the other 2 yrs, if housing cant place you, your on your own. Although, ive never heard of this happening to anyone. Gables and Woodside appt's have their own application process that involves being pulled in by people already squatting in that appt or if a totally empty appt arises you can move in with your posse. Empty appt's are rare but the best advice i have is start planning for housing early like thanksgiving time. Mills Hall is by far the nicest dorm on campus. It is located centrally and boasts sweet style living, large rooms, your own bathroom and common room.

All in all the experiencecan go either way. Most imp thing is to work hard and make lots and lots of friends by Getting involved.
