Montclair State University is one of the most comprehensive universities in NJ. Basically, this means that if you need to find a particular major that no other college in NJ offers, it probably exists at MSU. MSU is also great because it offers you the resources of a large university (15,000 undergrads, 1000 grads) with the closeknit environment of a small university (less than 25 students per class). The school is also very big: plenty of open spaces, plenty of grass, trees, places to visit during your first year. The facilities are undergoing major renovations though at this point in time. There's a lot of construction now, and if you have a car or commute, you will have parking problems daily. However, by the year 2006 and up, MSU will be the best public university in NJ, if not in the country!! Why, you ask? First, MSU has or will soon have almost everything that a college or university could possibly in terms of facilities:

1. The best, largest, newest residence halls in the country as of today. If you haven't heard about it, check out the school's website at www.montclair.edu and click on the picture of the bird on the bottom of the screen. It's called the MSU Student Residential Village. It has all the comforts a college student could possibly want: 4 people per apartment, 2 bathrooms, 1 double and 2 singles or 4 singles, a living room with movable furniture, free cable & high speed internet, coinless laundry machines on every floor(that's in all the residential halls, aka dorms), a dishwasher, the best sprinkler/fire safety system in NJ…I'll let you find out the rest on the website…

2. Its own train station with a direct route to downtown Manhattan, the hottest, most important urban & economic center on the planet as of now.

3. 3 large parking garages/deck, each with the following capacities: 1100, 1400, 1500 parking spots. So what? Well, this basically means that you will have very few parking problems starting in 2007 and beyond

4. The state television channel is located here (NJ Public Broadcasting Authority, aka PBS)

5. The NJ baseball and hockey teams come to MSU all the time. In fact, the ice rink is the official rink of the NJ state hockey team.

6. Adequate facilities for virtually every sport in the book of athlete. You do it, MSU has it.

7. A children's center (where your kids can stay while you're in class, for those of you who have or will have any) as daycare and learning center

8. And much, much more…Again, you don't have to take my word for it. Come and see for yourself, and visit the website. You won't regret it.

Also, there's lot to do here. Many organizations, frats, societies, etc to join. The only thing now is that out of 15000 or so undergrads, only slightly more than 3000 live on campus. But that'll change by 2008. Modifications will be made such that about half of the undergrads can live on campus, which will be about 7000 to 8000 undergrads.

If you're a minority student, you'll find that MSU is one of the best places to be. Although not a HBCU (historically black college/university), MSU has some of the best programs for high school students to apply to, such as the Health Careers Program, the 8 year/BS/MD program (which entitles you to a FULL SCHOLARSHIP, that right, FULL SCHOLARSHIP for 4 years!!!!!!!!), and more.

Finally, the cost. Isn't that what's always on you and your parent's minds!? MSU is the CHEAPEST, BEST COLLEGES IN NJ. What does that mean? MSU is the best combination of high quality and low cost you'll find anywhere: on average, less than $16000 a year (that includes tuition, fees, room and board!).

Some advice though. Try to become part of the Honors Program if you qualify or think you're up to it. It entitles you to have the priviledge of being able to take the smallest classes (usually less than 10 students), best professors (whom you'll truly learn from), priority registration (first day, if not first hour of registration, along with athletes, etc) for all classes, special counseling, and more.

Don't think that because MSU is not an Ivy League that you won't be challenged in your classes. Many students who were valedictorian and salutatorian of the graduating high school class have come to MSU and failed a couple of classes, even dropped out, not for any reason other than because they expected college to be a breeze, you know, party all the time, girls, girls, fun, fun, fun!! Well guess what, college is not about that. It's not easier or harder than high school: it's simply different. My advice for you all out there: in college, just like in life in general, there's a time and a place for everything: a time to study, a time to party and do all the fun things in life, a time to be lazy and do nothing, etc. The only question is: can you successfully decide how to use your time. Take it from me, a Molecular Biology major with a 4.000 cumulative GPA (out of 4.000, you can't get any higher), who is also President of the Haitian Student Association, and who works about 10 hours a week, in addition to partying, a social life, friends, and all the good things in life…

Final advice: if you want to find, define and refine your identity and enjoy life while getting the very best preparation for the economically, socially and politically tough world out there, Montclair State University, aka MSU, is the right place for you.
