Right now is the wrong time to be a student at Colgate. What your tour guide won't tell you when you visit the school is that seven years ago, a student was driving drunk, crashed into a tree, and killed three passengers in his car (the driver lived). Since then, the school has never been the same. The school now owns the houses of the five remaining fraternities, and, let's face it, at night on the weekends Colgate is more or less dead. Take a walk around the quad or down broad street and all you hear is silence. Eerie silence. Unfortunately, four bars cannot support 2,700 students looking for night life.I'm sure when there were 8+ frats and students living in off-campus housing, Colgate was a really great place to be. Now, almost everything is owned by Colgate, and I really don't understand how people who aren't in fraternities find things to do on the weekends. Will Colgate ever go back to what it was? Personally, I doubt it.I only have one comment about the students at Colgate. At the very beginning of my freshman year, President Rebecca Chopp addressed our entire class and told us about the tradition of the "Colgate hello." Apparently, it used to be a tradition that whenever two people crossed paths around campus, they would always say hello. Ironically, this is the antithesis of Colgate.
