Colgate is a located on a hill in with plentiful outdoor recreation opportunities, including miles of Colgate-owned x-country ski trails backing up campus. If you're looking for a place where you can reflect on an underappreciated yet beautiful landscape, this is it. If one takes the time to appreciate the surrounding rural communities, it becomes apparent that this area is hardly stagnant. Obviously it's no New York City, but Colgate honestly doesn't need any more people with enthusiasm for Starbucks. It seems sometimes that the majority of students here are content to follow in the social life that has been laid out by their forebears, but there are alternatives to the drinking culture. Admissions doesn't lie - the vast majority of Colgate students are very involved in whatever they do. Regardless of one's social or recreational leanings, almost anyone with a positive attitude can find his or her niche here. There are tons of different organizations and clubs to belong to, from political to Greek to student government to cultural to academic to athletic to music and art and film clubs. Because of the school's small size, leadership opportunities abound here. The members of the faculty, it must be said, are fantastic on the whole. Generally they are very accessible, and class sizes are small. (Mostly under 25; often under 15 in seminars.) With the possible exception of some intro-level courses, It is routine that professors make the effort to get to know all students in their classes. Although many students may seem mired in taking for granted their own consumption (of material goods even more than alcohol) there is a moderate percentage of students and a number of faculty concerned with progressive ideals, environmental and social justice, and diversity - which is heartening.
The university is moving in a good direction, and really offers a great balance for any open-minded student.
