Major: Design Arts - Industrial Design/Graphic Design/etc (This Major's Salary over time)
I attended Cornell for less than one semester as a freshman as an Apparel Design major (TXA). It was the most valuable and traumatic experience of my life. I found that the classes in my major weren't conducive to my creativity at all. I could not progress as an artist in the program. The people in my department weren't passionate about anything artistic. The large majority of students at Cornell are pretty much overprivileged, hardworking, money-minded and self centered. These kids are really good at over-working themselves and winning drinking contests. For me, it was a really unhealthy environment. People didn't understand why I was at all interested in being creative; for Cornell students- getting really stressed out for prelims to make C grades at best was worth it for the thursday night through sunday morning party time. I wasn't ready for an environment where I was expected to get 3 hours of sleep on weeknights to study and look forward to getting stupid on weekends. I basically got really sick physically, emotionally, and mentally. I really wanted to go here too. If I wasn't at all artistic—I would probably like it more. It is so competitive. Basically—the student mentality is about getting successful, making money and getting a trophy wife, all the while drinking on the way. If you value your education and not the grades, if you want to like your career and not just work for monetary gain, and if you expect college to be a time of self-discovery and not an exhausted drunken haze—I really don't recommend Cornell for you. I guess if I was an engineer or biology major it would be a different story. Oh, plus- I'm from the West coast, so I did experience a lot of culture shock from my encounters with long island kids.
